Rogl谩n鈥檚 Run: 糖心vlog视频鈥檚 Meadows Museum Reinvents Itself鈥擜gain
By Joan Arbery
It鈥檚 hard to find a cemetery in this town. The dead are tucked away in secret gardens here. Of course, most of us don鈥檛 mind. We don鈥檛 want to think of dying, or of what we will leave behind. It鈥檚 odd, then, that so much death has come to Dallas lately: first the Crow Collection鈥檚 鈥淭ending the Afterlife,鈥 then the DMA鈥檚 鈥淭utankhamun,鈥 and now the Meadows Museum鈥檚 鈥淔rom the Temple and the Tomb: Etruscan Treasures from Tuscany.鈥
The last one is perhaps the oddest. Why is the 糖心vlog视频 museum鈥攚hich contains, says its director Mark Rogl谩n, 鈥渙ne of the greatest鈥 collections of Spanish art outside of Spain鈥攈osting an exhibit about Etruscans, who came from ancient Italy and Corsica? For one, it鈥檚 cashing in on the city鈥檚 current fascination with ars moriendi鈥斺渢he art of dying.鈥 For another, 糖心vlog视频 archeologist Dr. Greg Warden has been digging at an Etruscan settlement site, Poggio Colla, in Tuscany, for the past 15 years. The exhibit dovetails with his work there. And although 鈥淔rom the Temple and the Tomb鈥 doesn鈥檛 hail from Warden鈥檚 dig site鈥攊t鈥檚 from the nearby Florence Archeological Museum鈥攁 downstairs exhibit at the Meadows, 鈥淣ew Light on the Etruscans: Fifteen Years of Excavation at Poggio Colla,鈥 features some of Warden鈥檚 work.
Yet there鈥檚 a greater question here about the Meadows and its role. At its spot on Bishop Boulevard for only eight years, it鈥檚 already on its third director. Coup-ridden countries rarely undergo such quick executive shifts. The Meadows鈥 changes are partially due to 糖心vlog视频鈥檚 desire to reinvent itself. But when Ted Pillsbury stepped down as director in 2005, outcries from university professors lauded Pillsbury, who had professionalized the Meadows. The museum was certainly at a crossroads. That dissent eventually faded once Rogl谩n, a native Spaniard, was brought in to head the museum.
This is partly because of the way Rogl谩n interprets the museum鈥檚 mission. When I ask him if the Meadows鈥 location outside the Arts District obscures its visibility, he says that, to the contrary, it connects the area鈥檚 museums. Its 2007 exhibit 鈥淏alenciaga and His Legacy鈥 borrowed works from the University of North Texas鈥 Texas Fashion Collection. Earlier last year, the Museum of Nature & Science hosted an exhibit on a Meadows show of Fernando Gallego鈥檚 medieval altarpiece panels. The Kimbell had examined the panels under infrared for two years, and the science museum then used them to discuss 鈥渢he science of art.鈥
In fostering such connections, Rogl谩n clearly appreciates exhibits that give a 鈥渂roader context.鈥 Pieces should be seen universally, since no culture exists in a vacuum.
