Storey Distinguished Faculty Fellow and Amy Abboud Ware Centennial Professor in Criminal Law, has been named to the Judicial Conference Advisory Committee on Criminal Rules by Chief Justice of the United States John Roberts.

The Judicial Conference serves as the policymaking body for the federal courts. It convenes twice a year to consider administrative and policy issues affecting the federal court system, and to make recommendations to Congress concerning legislation involving the Judicial Branch.

To do this, it convenes a number of committees, which are created by the Judicial Conference and staffed with members appointed by the chief justice. Professor Turner’s appointment will run through October 2028.

“I am confident your contributions will be many,” said Chief Justice Roberts in a letter to Professor Turner. “Your willingness to serve in this important capacity demonstrates your commitment to effective judicial administration, for which I am grateful.”

According to the U.S. Courts website, rules committee members include a range of legal experts, including federal judges, practicing lawyers, law professors, state chief justices, and high-level officials from the Department of Justice and federal public defender organizations.

The committees review proposed rule changes, solicit and discuss public comments, and forward approved amendments to the Standing Committee on Rules of Practice and Procedure. After consideration by the Standing Committee, the amendments proceed to the Judicial Conference, the Supreme Court, and Congress for adoption.
